Frequently Asked Questions

I have downloaded the Calldera mobile application but am unable to log in. How do I gain access to the app?

In order to use the Calldera app, you must first register. As part of the registration process, you only will be required to provide an e-mail address and zip code and will create a password that then can be used to log into both the mobile app and website.  If you forget your password, simply select the "Forgot Username or Password?" link on the login screen of either the mobile app or website.  From there, you can follow a simple and quick process for resetting your password.

How does Calldera determine what wines to recommend?

Each wine recommended to you by Calldera has been scientifically and objectively characterized in accordance with the taste characteristics intrinsically present in that wine and matched to your individual taste preferences…which we glean from a simple questionnaire about your preferences for various smells, foods and drinks other than wine. In addition to using your answers to the questionnaire, the Calldera application at times solicits and incorporates your feedback regarding recommended wines to inform future recommendations.

How does Calldera categorize wines?

Each wine recommended by the Calldera service has been evaluated by Calldera using objective, scientific techniques and instruments to determine the taste characteristics present in the wine (e.g., tannin, acid, sugar, body). The identified taste characteristics are then used to assign the wine to one of 26 different categories (“a” – “z”).  This categorization is exemplified by the proprietary Calldera Wine Wheel. For instance, a wine in the “s” category is dry, tannic, acidic, fruity, medium-to-full-bodied and oaky.  Learn more about the Calldera wine categorization methodology and Wine Wheel HERE.

How do I interpret the Calldera wine rating?

Calldera ratings are based on a 1 – 5 quality scale, with 5 being the highest rating.  Generally speaking, wine with a rating between 3 and 4 is of average quality.  Exceptional wines are typically rated 4.3 or higher.  When considering a recommended wine for purchase, check the vintage (e.g., "2019") to ensure it matches the vintage displayed in the Calldera wine app.  Then consider the Calldera rating and average price displayed in the Calldera wine app in context of the price you are being asked to pay.

What does the green "VALUE" star mean?

Wines with a high Calldera rating (generally 4.3 or higher) whose average retail price is 10% or more below the average price of other wines with a similar Calldera rating are flagged as value wines in the Calldera wine app.

Value wines are denoted in the Calldera wine app by a green “VALUE" star graphic superimposed on the wine label image.

I am surprised by the types of wines that are being recommended to me. Are these recommendations correct?

Try a few of the wines that are recommended to you...there’s a great chance that (to your surprise and delight!) you actually will like them. Then send the wines you’ve tried to your I Drank It list and rate them. Although the sign-up questionnaire is adequate in most cases for determining taste preferences for wine, we are all individuals. Sometimes more information is required – specifically, please give a “1” or “2” star rating to any wine you have tried and have not liked and then provide the requested feedback as to why you did not like the wine. Or if you already know you do not like a recommended wine or type of wine, simply send it to your I Drank It list and give it a “1” or “2” star rating and provide any requested feedback. The application will use your feedback to make necessary adjustments to your taste profile (note that you may have to provide negative ratings for a few wines in order to effect a profile change, as the application is programmed to not overreact to your occasional dislike for a particular wine).

Why should I send wines to the I Drank It list?

There are several reasons why you should send wines to the I Drank It list. For starters, a wine recommendation will not remain in the Calldera Recommendations list indefinitely – this is because we want you to receive “fresh” recommendations on a regular basis. Adding a wine to the I Drank It list also gives you the opportunity to rate the wine, to make tasting notes about the wine for your later review, to recommend the wine to your friends, to post a recommendation for the wine on Facebook and/or to message a recommendation for the wine via Twitter. Click HERE for a short video tutorial demonstrating how to send wines to I Drank It

Why should I rate the wines I have consumed?

Rating a wine that you have consumed provides two benefits –

  • It helps the Calldera application make better future wine recommendations to you
  • It is used to determine an average user rating for the wine that you and other Calldera subscribers see within the application

How do I provide a rating or a tasting note for a wine I have consumed?

You must first send the wine from the Calldera Recommendations or Friend Recommendations list to the I Drank It list (click HERE for a short video tutorial demonstrating how to send wines to I Drank It). Once the wine is in the I Drank It list, you will be presented with the options of rating the wine (if you have not previously rated the wine) and adding a tasting note. Click HERE for a short video tutorial demonstrating how to rate wines and HERE for a short video tutorial on making tasting notes.

I am sometimes unsure of which response option or options to choose when the Calldera application asks me for feedback. Is it best just to choose the “Wine is not of the quality that I expected” option?

You should provide the response or responses that most resonate with you. If you give the wine a 4 or 5 star rating and are prompted for feedback, select all of the reasons presented that describe why you like the wine. If you give the wine a 1 or 2 star rating and are prompted for feedback, select the default option “Wine is not of the quality that I expected” if you like other wines that you have tried that have the same Calldera classification (i.e., “y-raspberry”) but just do not like this particular wine OR alternatively, select all of the reasons presented that describe why you dislike the wine. Armed with various wine tasting experiences and the information the Calldera service provides you about the wines that you have tried, you will learn what you like and why, and along the way, the Calldera wine recommendation engine will adjust its recommendations to you based on your feedback. You cannot “break” the system with your feedback – rather, your feedback will help the system perfect its knowledge of your taste preferences so that it can make great wine recommendations to you.

Is there a way to filter or sort wines in the Recommendations, Friend Recommendations and I Drank It lists?

Wines in the Recommendations, Friend Recommendations and I Drank It lists can be sorted by Relevancy (i.e., Calldera top picks for you), Recency (i.e., wines added to the list by time/date, where the most recently added wines are at the top of the list), Retailer (wines in the list available from a specific wine seller), Average User Rating, your rating (a.k.a., "My Rating"), Producer (alphabetically by name), Average Price and Grape Variety.  You can access the sort/filter options by selecting the "Sort" button in the upper right-hand corner of the Calldera app.  Click HERE for a short video tutorial on filtering a list by wine seller.  Click HERE for a short video turorial on sorting a list by grape variety.

How do I send a wine recommendation to a friend, post a recommendation on Facebook or message the recommendation via Twitter?

You must first send the wine from the Calldera Recommendations or Friend Recommendations list to the I Drank It list (click HERE for a short video tutorial demonstrating how to send wines to I Drank It). Once the wine is in the I Drank It list, you will be presented with the options for recommending the wine to a friend, posting a recommendation for the wine on Facebook or messaging a recommendation for the wine via Twitter. Can I only recommend wines to friends who also have the Calldera wine app?

No, you can recommend a wine to any friend. If your friend is a registered Calldera user, your recommendation will be displayed in your friend’s Friend Recommendations list within the Calldera app. If your friend is not a registered Calldera user, an e-mail with your recommendation will be sent to your friend’s e-mail address that was provided by you when making the recommendation.

If I have rated a wine that I subsequently recommend to a friend, will my friend be able to view my rating?

No, the individual wine ratings you provide are only viewable by you. However, the ratings that you and other Calldera app users provide are aggregated to determine average user ratings for the wines displayed within the Calldera application.

Can I purchase wine via the Calldera application?

At this time, wine cannot be purchased through the Calldera application; however, selecting the Retailers button when accessing the Calldera application from the Web or selecting the Retailers icon within the mobile application when viewing a wine selection will present you with a list of local and online retailers that offer the wine for purchase.

Is an Internet/data connection required in order to use the Calldera mobile application?

No, you can view the Calldera Recommendations, Friend Recommendations and I Drank It lists without having a data connection. However, a data connection is required to receive new recommendations, to move a recommendation to the I Drank It list and to rate a wine, add/edit a tasting note or share the wine recommendation with friends either directly or via Facebook or Twitter.

If I have made a tasting note about a wine that I subsequently recommend to a friend, will my friend be able to view my tasting note?

It depends. The tasting notes you provide are only viewable by you unless, when you are recommending a wine to a friend, you select an option to share your tasting note with the friend to whom you are making the wine recommendation.

Some discount offers from wine sellers have an “Apply Offer” button or “Print Offer” button, while others do not. What is the purpose and proper use of these buttons?

The “Apply Offer” and “Print Offer” buttons are for one-time use offers (i.e., each customer can only receive the discount once on a qualifying purchase). You may either print the one-time use offer from the Calldera website by selecting the “Print Offer” button associated with the offer or you may select the “Apply Offer” button in the mobile application in front of the retailer when you are making a qualifying purchase. Note that you should only select the “Apply Offer” button in the mobile application in front of the retailer when you are making a qualifying purchase, as the offer will no longer be available to you either in the mobile application or on the website once the “Apply Offer” button has been selected. If you elect to print the offer from the Calldera website, once you have printed the offer, the “Print Offer” button on the web site and the “Apply Offer” button in the mobile application will no longer be available for you to select.
