Do To Be
(A Wine Musing)
So much time and energy is spent “keeping up with the Joneses.” But why? Arguably, those most accomplished and admired throughout history have been individuals unlike their peers.
Think of Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, William Shakespeare, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joan of Arc. Like other admired historical figures, each is remembered for his or her passion and dogged follow through on something of personal import. None had time nor energy to spend worrying about what others thought. And interestingly, these and other renowned individuals have been highly criticized by others either during their lifetimes or afterwards.
Comparing yourself to others and taking non-constructive criticism to heart is discouraging and wasteful of your time. Relish your individualism and focus on your passions. This is both the path to personal fulfillment and how you will make a difference in the world around you.
“The artist doesn’t have time to listen to the critics. The ones who want to be writers read the reviews. The ones who want to write don’t have the time to read reviews.”
– William Faulkner
